“RTÜK Draft Bill Opposes Constitution” – Bianet

“Communications lawyer İlkiz criticized the RTÜK draft bill: “The government cannot intervene against radio and television broadcasts. The provision should be lifted. It will cause illegal applications”.

Communications lawyer Fikret İlkiz declared that the “Draft Law on Radio and Television Enterprises and Broadcasting Services” was contrary to the law and the public’s right to information because it preserves the Prime Minister’s authority to interrupt broadcasts under “extraordinary circumstances”.

İlkiz pointed out that Article 25 on the “Suspension of Broadcasts” of Law No. 3984 on the Establishment of Radio and Television Enterprises and Their Broadcasts was preserved in the new draft bill. In an interview with bianet, the lawyer argued that the situation became even more complicated. (…)”

“RTÜK: “Magnificent Century” Series Clashes with “Moral Values”.” – Bianet

RTÜK issued a warning to Show TV on the grounds of the series “Magnificent Century”. The series about the life of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent went on air on 6 January. It is alleged to be “contrary to the national and moral values of the society”, RTÜK said.

The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) issued a warning to the Turkish television station Show TV on the grounds of the series “Magnificent Century” (‘Muhteşem Yüzyıl’). The series about the life of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent was criticized by Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç and members of the Prosperity Party (SP).

Feelings ran high already after promotional material had been broadcasted from 11 December onwards and billboards to advertise for the series were posted. Some people demanded to cancel the series even before the first episode had been broadcasted. On 5 January, a group of protestors gathered in front of the television station in Levent/Istanbul to express their disapproval.(…)”

” “Organized” Intolerance against “Magnificent Century” Series” – Bianet

After a statement of Deputy PM Arınç against the series “Magnificent Century”, members of the Felicity Party protested in front of the Show TV building. MHP members demanded to cancel the series. The history advisor and scriptwriter do not agree with the reactions.

The new TV series “Magnificent Century” set in the reign of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent in the 16th century created quite a stir in the Turkish media and public. The series was launched on Show TV in the beginning of January. It was criticized by the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), the Anatolian Agency, the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) and the responsible Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç. The series furthermore took flak from nationalist and Islamic parties.

Members of the Prosperity Party (SP) and the Anatolian Youth Association were accompanied by janissary musicians when they walked to the building of Show TV to express their protest against the series. Demonstrators destroyed advertisements of the series. Saying ‘Allah is great’, they also shouted slogans such as “Don’t sleep, government; take care of our history” and “Break the hands of the ones who touch the Ottomans”(…)

“A new TV series about Süleyman the Magnificent, the famous Ottoman sultan, also known as Kanuni Sultan Süleyman (Süleyman the Lawmaker), continued to draw criticism after the first episode was aired on Wednesday evening.

Titled “Muhteşem Yüzyıl” (Magnificent Century), the series was filled with many serious mistakes, historians told Today’s Zaman.

Historian Ahmet Yaşar Ocak said he did not like the show, while author Okay Tiryakioğlu noted that the show appealed to the imagination of the West. Author Mustafa Armağan said the series will only serve to destroy the ideals of society.(…)”

“RTÜK Punished Thoughts on “Genocide” Voiced by Turkish Writer ” – Bianet

“The Radio and TV Supreme Council suspended the broadcast of a program on Haber Türk because writer Nişanyan thoughts on the “Armenian Genocide” supposedly exceeded the limits of criticism. Also the series “Lady’s farm” was found “against the Turkish family structure”.

The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) decided to impose a broadcasting ban on the Turkish television station Haber Türk on the grounds of writer Sevan Nişanyan’s thoughts on the “Armenian genocide”. Nişanyan was guest at the program “One to one” hosted by Fatih Altaylı and had referred to the killing of a huge number of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

RTÜK took the decision on 15 June and notified Haber Türk on 21 June. The Council indicated that Nişanyan, one of several guests in the program, “exceeded the limits of criticism” with his statements that allegedly “humiliated the Republic of Turkey”.(…)”

“Good morning! On which mountain did Kurds die?” – this is how the President of the Contemporary Journalists Association (ÇGD), Ahmet Abakay, addressed the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) in reference to the council’s statement on the Israeli attack on the aid ships for Gaza on 31 May. RTÜK had condemned the “interference against the freedom to obtain information and the media’s freedom to publish news and opinions”.

In their announcement, RTÜK had said, “Israel did not only unlawfully murder innocent people but also committed media terrorism”. Abakay condemned the Israeli attack and commented RTÜK’s statement, “This is unbelievable, how did that come to their mind?”(…)”

“According to a drafted amendment of the Law on Radio and Television Broadcasting Institutions and Publishing Rights, the limit of foreign investment shall increase to 50 percent and RTÜK shall take over supervision and the ascertaining of the number of viewers.

The government plans to amend the Law on Radio and Television Institutions and Publishing Rights (no. 3894) as a supposedly required step on the way to the accession to the European Union. Due to the amendment, the maximum share of foreign capital shall be increased from 25 to 50 percent. Should the amendment be ratified, a foreign private person or a legal entity can become a direct shareholder of two broadcasting institutions.

Another amendment proposes the transfer of supervision from the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) to the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK). Accordingly, provisions regarding special regulations for public and private broadcasting organizations would be lifted. (…)”

The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) decided to issue a warning to the private Turkish television channel ATV Europe on the grounds of their news regarding the population ratio of one woman in six men in Mongolia, saying that “the Mongolian people asked for 20,000 men from Turkey”. The Supreme Council moreover decided to request justifications from the private television channels Show TV, ATV, Star TV, Flash TV and Cine 5.

The mentioned television channels made news in their main news bulletins on 20 and 21 January about the issue that “20,000 men from Turkey were in demand”. (…) “

“TV Series Promoting Hate Speech Blocked” – Bianet

A new TV series which promotes use of violence and promotes hate and racist sentiments was removed from broadcast following consistent complaints. This very series contributed to the nationalist ideological climate in the country says, Asst Prof. Celenk.

A controversial TV series, namely Kurtlar Vadisi (Valley of Wolfs), has been removed from broadcast following disperse complaints by viewers to the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK).

The production company stopped its diffusion without a formal intervention from the Council but the incident brought a debate on programmes including hatespeech and violence and/or censorship.

Subtitled “Terror”, the new series’ content was to deal with the Kurdish insurgency and relations with Iraq.(…)
